Maxtor External Hard drive that no registers in the drive manager

I have a Maxtor 200GB external hard drive that was working fine on my XP pc and then 2 weeks ago the drive dropped out and no longer regiesters on the drive manager but is still registered on the device manager.

How do I retrieve the information? Thanks.

try formatting it and if no good replace disk.
