Argh!! HP Lappy is Slow (2gb ram.. Bah!) and does weird stuff.. Help!!

My laptop has slowly been getting worse.. Its just little things so I dont notice it all the time...

I got it off a friend a year ago after he had it for a month (it didnt suit his needs so I bought him a laptop of similar value and he gave me his)

It takes ages to shut down. But sometimes it doesnt shut down... it just stays at the screen telling me its going to close but it doesnt.. I just hold the power switch to turn it off. I try to keep it on nowdays (a week or so at a time)

When I start it up it sometimes allows me to enter my password and then the screen goes black with a yellow stripe down the right side. Most of the time it just sits like that til I hold the power button to shut it off. Then it does the whole repair on startup process... Sooo frustratining...

Its meant to be a pretty flash lappy with 2gb ram and 120gb of storage (or something like that) but it just runs sooooo slow... It came with vista. Someone said thats the reason its slow..?

I am also trying to set up my gmail email through explorer... I have put all the details in correct (as per the trouble shooting guide on gmail..) and still it doesnt recieve the emails to the explorer inbox...

Previously I had a diffrent email set up using exchange?? But I no longer have access to the server used for that account...

Any ideas guys? I am ready to take it to a repairer but its a saturday plus Im really worried about price...

Are there any free anti virus things on the net? Im fairly certain I have a few of those (hotmail account sending spam to EVERYONE..)

Cheers
Sonia

Hi Sonia

Sounds like you have a lot of different issues with your computer...

The cheapest way for you to get the computer up and running like new, is to reinstall the whole system.
1. First backup your personal data
2. run the recovery disks provided with your computer
3. restore your backup
4. install any additional software like, MS Office, Antivirus software, etc...

Regarding antivirus software, there is one antivirus I recommend, is called AVG Antivirus and it is for FREE. You can download it directly from http://free.avg.com
Also your Windows Vista has a utility called Windows Defender, run that program (located under Start > All Program) and run a full system scan. That will scan for any Trojans, worms, malware, Adware, etc...
