WIN XP PRO randomly missing keystrokes

Every so often, after restarting the OS (updates, new installs) I experience weird KB behaviour: a particular key does not work - be it coma, number '5', letter 'o' or 'm' - usually one key only.
I have tried four different keyboards (PS2) no difference. The problem occurs in various applications: MS OFFICE 2000, MOZILLA, SKYPE. It seems to be the OS problem rather than hardware but...
I am using the 'Polish Programmers' keyboard driver for years but this issue appeared 5-6 months ago.
Would anyone have ideas?
