slow start-up/loss of memory

I wouls appreciate your help with what I think is 2 problems.
(1) If I shut down and switch off at the power point--then let the computer get cold--- it will not power-up again unless I switch on at the power point and then leave the computer for 20-30 minutes, then, when I press the on button, it will boot -up immediately.
(2) I have had to disconnect my DVD Burner as with it connected my screen icons go opaque and I get all sorts of weird error messages. I have checked the burner from another machine and it did the same thing--I changed the cable--it did the same thing. I changed RAM it did the same thing.I put in a new power supply--same thing. I am running an AMD Athelon 1.2 GIG, with 1 GIG RAM, XP SP2,DVD burner+DVD reader.I am unable to play disk or burn but all other programs run great just as long as the burner is disconnected. HELP I don't want to move to VISTA as yet.
REgards,
Elizabeth.

Hi, make sure you have a strong enough power supply (a good power supply costs about $100+)... if your DVD/CD burner is making your windows run fully or displays some error messages then get a new burner as they are not expensive anymore...

Hi Kris,
Many thanks for your reply---however I have installed a new burner and that didn't help at all. It also doesn't explain the reluctance to start-up in the morning.

elizabeth.

If you have tested all the component of your computer and you still have the problem then it is your motherboard...

Thanks Kris,

I meant to say that I had installed a new power supply in answer to your last reply. I am now convinced that you are correct and that it is a motherboard issue. I don't know if I can get a new one for a computer as old as this one, but, will try.
Many thanksd for your help.
Regards,
Elizabeth.
