dell laptop latitudr d510 screen goes dead

I have a Latitude D510 Dell Laptop.
I turned on my computer, and was greeted with a black screen, notifying me that there was a file missing in the System Registry. I've researched this on the internet, and all the guides I've read have recommended I insert the Windows Setup disk and go from there.
Problem is, as soon as I inserted the disk, the battery died permanently. I had the recharger in the computer at the time, so it couldn't have been lack of charge.
I put in another new battery today, the same message lit up. I left the recharger in for five minutes on the black screen, thinking the problem was charge. When I came back, the computer had shut down.
I then pressed the ON button, and the computer wouldn't turn on.
